INTERIOR & DÉCOR, but with a twist

Il Barbiere, a project steeped in history, research and experimentation

ACS Architecture Lab’s projects are dresses sewn on to customers’ requests. The resulting narrative is a story of spaces, lights, colours, geometries and materials, that are the elements that permeate everyday life. This modus operandi can be found in Il Barbiere, a barber shop retail project four-handed developed with TRILAB, the company that is owner of the brand. The starting point of the project was the research on figurative elements and materials, starting from the viewing of documentaries on the Italian barbering of the fifties, on North American barber shops and on the coiffeurs of other European cities such as London and Amsterdam. Therefore, a journey through countries and cities aimed at a transposition in terms of architecture and design of the customer’s imagery.

Once the research phase was completed, the design team was responsible for finding unity between the instances and the suggestions collected. In addition, these elements had to be “embroidered” together with the customer’s desires and the technical needs required by the activity. The goal was to translate everything into a harmonious, aesthetically interesting and not at all predictable space.

If the plunge into history during the research phase was a moment of fascination, the realization phase was for ACS Architecture Lab the most experimental one. Colours, lights and materials had to be inserted coherently in a space that gave them the right architectural connotation. To this end, every single element, from furniture to the finest finishes, has been studied, designed, sampled and eventually manufactured. This was not a simple phase, especially when it comes to finding a compromise between the client’s wishes and the architect’s vision. In this case, the most critical point was the dialogue with the customer about the choice of a white wood panelling, necessary in order to balance the blue of the walls but initially considered not suitable for a barber shop according to the client's opinion.

In the opening phase, the coherence and positive outcome of the project was confirmed in the opinions of those who were present at the inauguration. Among them, one of the barbers said “It seems to me a place I have always been”. Finally, we can say that in Il Barbiere find concreteness the words of the contemporary architect Peter Zumthor about the importance of building the right envelope in which people’s lives can flow, permeating it with values that find their origin in the memories of the past to build future ones.
