HOTELS & RESTAURANTS, beyond mainstream

A stay in history at Umiltà 36 Luxury Hotel by CaberlonCaroppi studio

Embedded in the centre of Rome, in the lively area of Rione Trevi, just a short walk from the monumental fountain and the Quirinale Palace, lies Umiltà 36 Luxury Hotel, one of the latest projects by CaberlonCaroppi studio.

Beyond the geographical coordinates, the structure is sited in a historic building which, over the last twenty years, has been housing management offices. Today, thanks to a careful operation of modification of intended use supported by interventions of architectural, engineering and interior design, it reopens to the public dressed in a whole new tailored suit. Namely, a 5 star luxury hotel.

All the structural measures have been conceived taking into account not only the intrinsic characteristics of the building, but also the development of an area that encompasses over two thousand years of history. Through the demolition of some parts, reinforcement works of the load-bearing walls and the creation of large openings, the studio has given it a new life, preparing the building to accommodate its new function.

Coming to the internal configuration of the hotel, a large scale wooden door anticipates the majesty of the interiors. The first room, in which the original double height has been restored, features a classic barrel vault. Among the attributes that qualify the structure we find, indeed, the perception of depth of the environments, intended to emphasize the spaces and to give captivating scenic views. The previous commercial function of the structure had in fact led to a progressive lowering of the ceilings, which the studio led by architects Ermanno Caroppi and Chiara Caberlon corrected. This intervention has also given new emphasis and spotlight to the lobby and the historic marble staircase that leads to the rooms and apartments on the upper floors.

The inspiration in terms of interior design comes from the aesthetics of Roman salons, a true model of Italian sociality as well as key places for debate and cultural exchange. The choices of taste and style that define the environments of the Umiltà 36 Luxury Hotel retrace the lines of these venues. The result is an enchanting balance between a highly decorative flavor and contemporary minimalism, between grace and lightness, as in the tradition of the Dolce Vita aesthetics. Thus, the use of wallpapers with rich sceneries, the marble staircase and the choice of combining wood materials in warm tones infuse the environment of a certain allure, especially in the area that extends from the entrance to the reception. On the other hand, the walls of the internal cloister are painted an intense blue, enhanced by a glass cover which lightens the spaces.

The location of the hotel, positioned between two areas of great attendance, has also allowed to expand the offer, which includes a gourmet restaurant of Argentine cuisine. The direction of the restaurant, headed by the creative personalities behind El Porteño in Milan, takes up the design concept of the city of Milan, however adapted to the geometries of an historical building and to the new spaces, thus dialoguing harmoniously with the other environments.

On the noble floors are located the 29 rooms, distributed between the first and second floor. The high ceilings are emphasized by the wood panelling, also used for the headboards of the beds, in full 1950s style. The last two floors house 18 apartments equipped with a kitchenette, a restroom and a bedroom, to offer a different option of accommodation, while retaining the same style of the rooms. By opting for both classical and modern materials, which perfectly alternate, a story is traced from the past to the present.

Finally, the top floor, overlooking the Vittoriano and the rooftops of Rome, guests the panoramic terrace. Here, the outdoor lounge restaurant and the cocktail bar offer a meeting venue for the hot season, right in the middle of the Eternal City.

The comfort that characterizes Umiltà 36 Luxury Hotel is not only visual, but also environmental. The latest generation systems have been designed in order to equip the structure with high standards of services. The mechanical equipment is totally integrated into the furniture, with a result of minimal invasiveness and maximum comfort for the guests. In addition, a combined sensor system allows visitors to have full control over access and room attendance. In short, a stay not only in history, but also in maximum wellbeing.
