Founded in 1997, the award winning architecture and design firm GaS Studio has offices in Milan, Rome, Lugano – managed by the Italian team Andrè Straja, Giacomo Sicuro and Lenka Lodo – Sonoma and San Francisco – managed by Jim Goring and Douglas Thornley. Among the most innovative projects signed by GaS Studio, the sustainable luxury resort Casa di Langa has won the studio the TOP ID Award 2022 and, more recently, the MIPIM Award in the “Best Hotel & Turism Resort '' category. Here is therefore an overview of this magnificent structure located right at the gates of the Langhe.

Projected in collaboration with Parisotto+Formenton Architetti studio and realized by Malabaila&Arduino, the boutique hotel Casa di Langa combines a classic Piedmont design heritage with a sustainable design scheme and an authentic deluxe experience.

The starting point of the whole work has been the reuse of a left incomplete original structural system which has been deeply renovated in terms of views, volumes and lines. The fil rouge transversal to the whole project is the respect towards the territory from an aesthetic, functional and environmental point of view.

“The team we created was enriched by our different backgrounds and strengths - despite our somewhat differing orientations and experiences, the synergy we were able to create has been our winning formula. We experienced a real collaboration based on fruitful exchange and dialogue. Our combined efforts and partnership, we believe, is what has made Casa di Langa a huge success” – Aldo Parisotto, Partner at Parisotto + Formenton Architetti (P+F).

The architecture of the place sits on a hillside and presents a C-shaped structure articulated around a central court, conceived as a garden cascading towards the valley, with a series of large terraces. The rural vernacular architecture recalled by the arched porticos, the external balconies and the red roof tiles are thus rephrased through a more contemporary approach.

The chromo-material concept, central feature of the project, develops from a detailed study of Alta Langa’s colours, sceneries, seasons, materials and prevailing architecture types. Everything, from the rough and beautifully imperfect surfaces to the strong dominance of the green element, refers to nature and the culture of the region.

Nestled in a pristine nature and silence, far from the city centres, Casa di Langa perfectly fits the concept of a getaway house. The peculiar structure consists of two sections, one overlooking the surrounding UNESCO Heritage hills of Langhe and one directed towards the courtyard terraces, thus offering the guests the possibility to have a peaceful retreat while enjoying the view of the surrounding 42 hectares estate, whose landscape design project has been curated by Land Studio. All the 39 rooms and suites, indeed, are endowed with spacious terraces and loggias, conceived as outdoor extensions of the surrounding landscape.

GaS Studio’s commitments towards sustainability permeate every facet of Casa di Langa. This is evident from the initial choice of repurposing an abandoned and un-finished structure as well as, in a circular economy view,  from the re-utilization of existing materials on site and the selection of local suppliers and manufacturers.

In terms of energy resources, Casa di Langa resorts to a 100% sustainable mix of solar energy, a geothermal and photovoltaic system for heating and cooling a certified renewable energy. While, as for the hydric resources, the water consumption is entirely recycled into grey water and, after an adequate treatment, reused by the structure and for the irrigation of the vineyards.
“In all of our work we seek to manage meaningful designs that are responsive to clients’ needs, create memorable spaces that contribute to their communities and landscapes, and touch the land and the environment as gently and as positively as possible. Casa di Langa is evidence of these efforts and shows the excellence in design and sustainability that is at the heart of our practice and this project” – Andre Straja, Partner at Goring & Straja Architects.

Again with regard to the project’s signature environmental focus, notable is the reforestation initiative with native trees aiming at increasing the plant cover of the property. Furthermore, at the resort’s restaurant, Fàula, kitchen waste is composted and reused for the organic vegetable garden, in accordance with the ‘zero-mile’ philosophy and to minimize the carbon footprint of the ingredients.

Besides, Casa di Langa is committed to the elimination of plastic, with the only exception of recycled and biodegradable plastic. Finally, the sustainable approach is also to be found in the scenic lighting design project, realized together with PSLab and based on principles of energy efficiency.
