Hotel The Major: the essence of Rome through the language of architecture

A short distance from the Basilica of Saint Mary Major, on top of the Roman hill Esquilino, is located the former Hotel Gallia, now renovated by the Italian firm Ceccaroli Architettura and renamed Hotel The Major. If the choice of a new appellation is a clear homage to the basilica, such a change was accompanied by an important aesthetic renewal. The main idea was to give the historic hotel a new appearance in full respect of its history and tradition.

The creative concept that infused the entire project is that of a contemporary elegance aesthetically linked to the surrounding landscape, consisting of historical architecture typical of the Capitoline territory. A key element was also the visual connection with the adjacent church, whose extemporaneous beauty can be admired from every corner of the hotel. Each space, from the main hall to the single rooms, has been designed to offer a specific view of the church. The rooms, characterized by the same blue shade, are described by a classic and at the same time contemporary style. Different in cut, width and type, they are thus defined by uniform finishes and colours.

As for the specific areas that make up the structure, the hall is the necessary starting point for the analysis of the interior. The latter is characterized by an interesting contrast between the dark tones of the walls and the bright ones of the furniture. In the centre, a large rectangular plate embedded in the ceiling serves as a catalyst for attention for guests as well as an entrance for artificial light. The scenic touch, inevitable in every project by Ceccaroli Architettura, is given by the vegetable elements that descend in an irregular way from the plate.

The space is completed by the library, the fireplace and the living room. Thus arranged, these three elements communicate a sense of welcome and intimacy typical of Italian hospitality. There is also a dining area, accessible directly from the street, a meeting room with an adjacent coffee break area, and, of course, the reception. To complete the whole there is the rooftop with panoramic views of Saint Mary Major, the outdoor terrace with double refreshment area and the covered pool.
