The Melià Hotel in via Masaccio, Milan, has been completely renovated and revised in its design thanks to the creative partnership between Vittorio Grassi Architects’ expertise and architect Alvaro Sans’ innovative signature. A high-end hospitality destination that has been revamped in all its spaces, from the lobby to the restaurant up to the meeting rooms, the core idea of the project was to provide the structure of a character of openness to the city through modular and interconnected spaces, and the result fully expresses it.

The originality of the project primarily lies in the separation of spaces, for which no walls have been used. At the same time, in order to accentuate the character of openness, the surface area of the entrance has been doubled and the enclosed spaces abolished. Another specific element of the new Hotel Melià is the use of green, both chromatically and as a botanical refuge. This creates on the one hand a pleasant contrast effect compared to the neutral and minimal style of the furniture, while on the other it responds to the urban green design concept that Alvaro Sans intended to convey. The different areas of which the hotel is composed wind around the internal lush gardens giving continuity to the spaces, as an extension of one over the other. The ficus that stands in the central courtyard serves as the green architrave of the renovated structure, so that the botanical element becomes a substantial part of the edifice itself.

Milan, the city that houses the hotel, is well represented by the green element, which Vittorio Grassi Architects together with Alvaro Sans wanted to embrace in order to provide an additional link with the city. The European capital of design, Milan indeed presents floral and botanical decorations as part of the most prestigious city architecture. Lighting is, besides the openness and the green, the third central element of the project. Its enhancement has also gone through the use of high skylights that optimize the entry of natural light. The sumptuous crystal chandeliers, already present before the recent architectural intervention, have been maintained in the restyling.

The renovation not only involved the hotel itself, but also two complementary bodies: the Mamì restaurant, an eclectic Milanese gastronomic address, and the Elyxr Meliá café. From the lobby one  enters the restaurant, which welcomes guests in a contemporary and refined environment, characterized by soft lights, sinuous shapes and custom furniture. The cafeteria, following the design of the entire structure, looks like a large open space with tables inside and outside, where the cocktail bar, the restaurant, the meeting and co-working areas coexist. In the final analysis, the Vittorio Grassi Architects studio has given design and aesthetic shape to the architect Alvaro Sans’ vision with an internationally oriented and at the same time conforming to the context of Milan project. Beyond aesthetics, the studio is also committed to ensuring the highest standards of safety, innovation and sustainability.
