The new frontiers of human technology

Once upon a time there were crafts workshops. Then came the advent of industrial design and mass production. Technology has gradually become an integral part of production processes, and today we hear talk of digitalization and industry 4.0. This is the present. But what about the future? How will design change? What will be its role? How will it relate to the manufacturing tradition, to which it is still closely connected, in spite of it all? These questions seem to already find answers, surprisingly enough, inside a producer based in Brianza, Elli Design, a company “outside the box” in its philosophy and its design approach.

Founded in 2014 thanks to the advanced intuitions of Alessio Elli, from the outset the firm has pursued a balance between an artisanal past (in processes of invention and creativity) and innovation, represented by robotics and 3D printing technology. A combination that has one objective: to reach a sustainable future. The path leads towards management of the entire product life cycle, from the raw material to its use at the time of disposal, exploiting additive manufacturing techniques (commonly known as 3D printing). The value of the product is therefore not just aesthetic and material, but also virtuous, for reduction of environmental impact. Elli Design thus revolutionizes the concept of furniture design and its stylistic language: “A décor product can contribute to the battle against climate change, improving quality of life, activating ways of doing business in relation to social and environmental responsibility,” the company asserts.

The collections of Elli Design are made with polymeric materials from recycled sources, using additive manufacturing thanks to collaboration with the Italian start-up Caracol. The production process generates finished products by adding layers of material, rather than subtraction – as happens in turning or milling. This virtue keeps costs lower and eliminates scrap during the workmanship. Everything is based on the principles of the circular economy: relying on the properties of plastic, the products of Elli Design are 100% recyclable, in keeping with the project “Made & Remade” promoted by the company, with the commitment to recover materials at the end of the product’s life span, giving them a new lease on life. Thanks to the perfect collaboration between designers, artisans and robots, the horizons of “human technology” expand into new meanings with the creations of Elli Design, reflecting the unrivalled taste and savoir-faire of Made in Italy.
