INTERIOR & DÉCOR, but with a twist

The charm of slick interiors in the ultimate London penthouse designed by SHH

Slick and modern are the adjectives that best define this penthouse interior design project by SHH studio on Henigman’s development. We are in London, on The Bishop Avenue, an high-class street running from the north of Hampstead Heath to East Finchley. It is here that SHH took care of the transformation of what once was an empty shell into a penthouse of contemporary taste, endowed with interiors designed to maximize the lush nature of the land on which it sits. It is a private development on 2.5 acres of landscaped land whose residents can now count on the maximum technology and security of an extremely efficient concierge service. The refinement of the interior is informed in the shapes and colours by the same landscape. The place, British craftsmanship and London culture are the main pieces of such a mosaic of inspirations.

“Our interior design effort was focused on shaping a unique lateral space to bring balance and a subtle feel of luxury for modern living. A combination of carefully selected and unique, bespoke designed pieces of furniture, lighting and artwork by the team contributed to the ultimate living and entertainment pad. SHH worked closely with suppliers such as Art et Floritude, Riviere Rugs, CTO Lighting, Dedar and Tom Faulkner to develop particular elements of the FF&E”, explained Rupert Martineau, the Project Head of Residential Interiors. The chromatic palette and the materials selected for the interior are directly inspired by the canopy tree top on which the penthouse is positioned. This inspiration translates into soft shades of green and brown, timber veneer, bronze metal and tanned leather tones, which are found in the intricate path of details and murals reproducing the landscape of Hampstead Heath. This recreates a play of references between inside and outside almost without end.

As for the specific structure of the project, the entrance to the third floor penthouse is via a private elevator with direct access to the lobby of the apartment. From the latter, characterized by marble and wood finishes, a corridor leads to the living area, open and bright due to the glass windows that envelope the space and the large outdoor terrace connected to it. The floor is in herringbone wood, which acts as a pendant to the metallic bronze of the lights and fixtures. Designed in contrast to the main living room, the dining room features darker tones, wall coverings and timber veneers. Large pivot screens in ribbed glass then create an additional connection between the living room, the kitchen and the snug, located behind a double-sided fireplace. In this area the colour palette is moodier with shadowy grey tones, offset by bronze accents and ribbed glass. Each corner of the kitchen is custom-made, starting from the brass and mirror feature shelving with integral illumination system over the curvilinear island.

The same precision in detail and design is found in the Master Suite, equipped with an elegant bathroom, walk-in closet and private terrace, all characterized by fine elements in brass, crystal and fabric. In order to confer the illusion of greater spatial openness, a floor to ceiling headboard and glass mirrors have been mounted behind the bedside tables. On the same floor are two guest bedroom suites defined by creamy pastel tones, soft materials and a relaxed atmosphere. Finally, sand and caramel tones characterize the studio, where there is a majestic bespoke veneered bookcase and a well of light to expand the illumination and the connection with the surrounding greenery.

The lower floor of the property is in stark contrast to the upper part. This difference in tone is due to the use of grey tone fabric panelling for the walls of the display units and the warm and deep tones of the entertainment area. It is a multipurpose space consisting of a games/dining room, a private projection room, a pool table, a bar and a dance studio or  yoga room. The area has also been equipped with a steam shower and dressing room with modern finishes. Finally, the development also houses the first indoor 25 metre swimming pool, furnished with spa, jacuzzi, steam room, sauna, beauty salon and Technogym fitness equipment. In a nutshell, a real private retreat set between landscaped gardens and beauty, as that of the bespoke sculptures by award-winning artist David Harber.
