INTERIOR & DÉCOR, but with a twist

A Project Where Material, Sensations, and Aspirations Blend – View Attic by MAC

Designed by the Milan-based design studio MAC, the View Attic project perfectly aligns with the design philosophy of its founders, Stefania Martinelli and Claudio Calabrese. The concept is that of a welcoming place with a strong sensory impact, infused with timeless design, where the relationship between spaces, furnishings, and materials meets the needs and aspirations of people. This is evident in the renovation project of the approximately 400-square-meter apartment located on the top two floors of a tower building in the San Siro district of Milan.

The materiality of the selected finishes and the lighting design were conceived to emphasize the silhouettes of the interiors and the overall volumes, creating a play of reflections and references between the articulation of the plans, the natural and artificial lights, and the surfaces. All materials used are of natural origin. Specifically, the onyx-travertine marble for the flooring extends vertically along the main wall of the living room and kitchen; Emperador dark marble, Verde Alpi marble, and Nero Marquinia marble are used in the bathrooms; walnut-stained oak wood is used for the staircase, bookshelves, and bedroom floors. The spatial and chromatic design is complemented by the furnishings, which are closely tied to the architecture of the place.

Regarding the geometry of the spaces, the design begins with the entrance, directly connected to the living area and filtered by a wooden volume that separates it from the main room, while allowing access to the sleeping area on the lower floor. The synthesis between the two levels of the house is enhanced by the double height and the linear staircase with cantilevered steps fixed to the load-bearing wall, which is clad in backlit wooden slats.

Upon climbing the staircase and crossing the threshold of the upper floor, one is immersed in a cone of light: the glazed volume of the services gives the impression of being suspended over the staircase volume, while the large windows separating the interior and exterior provide, more than a separation, a sense of continuity. On the same level are the kitchen and dining area, as well as the green terrace and the pool beyond the glassed doors.

Reaching the terrace, one feels like being on a large design boat. Its wooden flooring shapes the furniture volumes and hides the pool systems, giving unity to the whole. The balanced rhythm of the vertical wooden elements and the greenery bring guests back to a Lombard landscape dimension. The pool, 18 meters long, required significant structural intervention on the existing basin. Its elevation allowed for the accommodation of systems and the creation of double height in the living area. The choice of light-coloured cladding emphasizes the transparency of the water, enjoyable even from the kitchen workspace designed by Ze.ro design.

Finally, the lower floor, where the sleeping area is located, includes five bedrooms, each equipped with wardrobes, a desk, an en suite bathroom, and a private terrace. Access is through a dark-toned portal, filtering the transition to the new space and creating a harmonious contrast of lights and sensations.
