HOTELS & RESTAURANTS, beyond mainstream

Fairmont Washington DC, where the dividing lines between the city and the hotel seem to disappear

The visual imagery behind the renovation of the Fairmont Hotel in Washington DC by Jeffrey Beers International is that of the architectural grandeur and lush green parks of the US capital. The historical hegemony of the city and the uniquely stratified heritage are reflected in every part of the hotel structure renovated by the studio. The natural light that penetrates through the openings is maximized by a fresh and bright colour palette, with white walls and fine coverings, while the dark wood floors and gold details elevate the whole to a higher level. The selection of works of art is no less important, as the visual connection between tradition, historicity and present translates into pictorial references to the past of Washington DC, conceptual decorations and visually stimulating contemporary compositions. Therefore, we can refer to an urban oasis in the elegant West End district where the dividing walls between the city and the hotel seem to disappear, seamlessly.

For the reception areas the image that Jeffrey Beers International had in mind was that of a secret garden, where banquet spaces become a natural extension of the outdoor courtyard, just like a wonderful and unexpected refuge. The elements that convey this vision are the winter white coating that covers the entire walls, the decorative ceiling lights whose design resembles that of contemporary outdoor lanterns and the carpet inspired by autumn fallen leaves. On the other hand, the crystal chandeliers of the Grand Ballroom and the furniture in dark shades with bronze finishes infuse sophistication to the areas. The collection of works of art also refers to the same concept of secret garden, with abstract and figurative interpretations of the local landscape, of the architecture of the city and of the historical figures that have marked it. The diversity of artistic techniques and the alternation of warm-cold accents give harmonic interruption to the sophisticated design rigor.

The Gold Lounge resulting from the intervention of Jeffrey Beers International is characterized by a layering of elements, carefully selected works of art and thematic contrasts. The previous built-in reception has been replaced by a sit-down desk placed on a chromatic carpet characterized by an intense blue with gold accents. The decorative covering that acts as a background to the reception is an inlay of blue of varying intensity with golden accents, thus giving depth to the space. The existing seats have been covered with a soft gray fabric and rich Cognac leather, while antique mirrors and appliques were added, for a high-end residential effect. The result is a space as welcoming as an urban retreat, with the right balance of comfort and sophistication.
